Trump rules out meeting with Putin in the ‘immediate future’

Republican admitted his frustration with the Russian leader after failing to end the war in one day upon returning to the White House, as he had promised

The president of the United States has ruled out a meeting “in the immediate future” with his Russian counterpart, an American official said on Tuesday (21), after the two leaders announced a meeting in Budapest last week.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke by phone on Monday with Russia’s Foreign Minister, , after Trump announced that the two top diplomats would meet this week to organize a summit in . “There is no need for an additional in-person meeting between the secretary and the foreign minister, and there are no plans for President Trump to meet with President Putin in the immediate future,” a Trump administration official said on condition of anonymity. However, he called the call between Rubio and Lavrov “productive.”

The Kremlin also declared on Tuesday that there was no specific date for the summit between Trump and Putin. The Russian leader spoke by telephone last Thursday with the Republican, who had a meeting scheduled for the following day with the Ukrainian president, to discuss the supply of American-made Tomahawk missiles, which could penetrate deep into Russia.

Trump described the call as a breakthrough and quickly posted on social media that he would meet Putin in Budapest within two weeks. This was the latest abrupt change from him, who welcomed Putin in August, the first time the Russian leader has set foot on Western soil since ordering the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
