Opposition senators and allies of the former president of the House (PSD-MG) began to cite the ruling against the minister, from the (Supreme Federal Court), as a parameter for voting on a nomination to the court.
The 41 signatures represent a majority of the 81 senators. The number is the minimum necessary for the president (PT) to fill the vacancy in the STF.
The attempt to open impeachment proceedings against Moraes was blocked by the president of the Senate, (União Brasil-AP), defender of Pacheco’s name for Barroso’s seat.
Opposition senators began to cite the cohesion achieved in signing the request as a message to the government that, since they are unable to move forward with the Supreme Minister’s departure, they can, at least, prevent the approval of a name closely linked to the PT.
Pacheco, former president of the Senate, is the favorite name even among some of Lula’s allies, who also point out that the fact that the vote is secret is a risk to Messias. The senators’ reading is that the president’s re-election today is more assured than it was three months ago and that the PT member could save a nomination more aligned with the party for a possible fourth term.
There is also a veiled demand for reciprocity between the government and the Senate. Parliamentarians remember that they recently defeated the , which contributed to practically burying the discussion on amnesty for those involved in the , a topic dear to the PT administration.
