Doctor who received baby in the maternity ward says it is too early to talk about an error and that protocols were followed

Doctor Mariana Colodetti, neonatologist at the Bárbara Heliodora Maternity Hospital, in Rio Branco, gave a press conference this Saturday (25), following the case of the baby presumed dead and found alive inside the coffin, moments before the burial, at the Morada da Paz Cemetery.

During the press conference, the doctor clarified that she was not present at the birth, but took over the shift at around 7 am, when family members arrived at the hospital. “I received the baby around 10 am and we promptly gave him all the support he needed,” he said.

According to Mariana, it is still too early to talk about medical error. “It’s too early to say in error. If you look in the medical literature, there are cases like this, they are rare, they are exceptional, they can happen. And error we can’t say now. But of course, looking back, it will be investigated”, he said.

The neonatologist highlighted that, in situations of premature birth with suspected fetal death, there is a technical protocol to be followed. “There are criteria that involve an obstetrician and pediatrician. When the baby is born, if there are signs of death, the team carries out all the procedures before signing the death certificate. After that, the procedures continue with the nursing team and social services”, he explained.

Mariana also highlighted that the investigation must verify whether there was any failure in one of these stages. “The important thing now is to understand what happened and ensure full assistance to the baby and the family”, he added.

The Acre State Department of Health (Sesacre) reported that it is also investigating the case and that the appropriate administrative measures will be adopted after the investigation is completed.
