WASHINGTON – California’s Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, said in an interview aired this Sunday that he is considering running for President of the United States in 2028 and that he will make a decision after the 2026 midterm legislative elections.
Newsom has made some moves this year to test the waters for a possible presidential bid and has gained prominence within his party by confronting Republican President Donald Trump on a range of issues.
“I’m excited to see who will step up in 2028 and who will rise to that moment,” Newsom said on CBS News’ “Sunday Morning.”

Asked if he was considering running, Newsom said, “Yes, I would be lying (if I said) otherwise.”
Under the US Constitution, Trump is prohibited from running for a third term, but he has floated the idea, saying earlier this year that “there are methods by which you could do that.”

Newsom has put California at the forefront of Democratic efforts to redraw district maps in midterm elections to counter similar efforts by Republican-led states as both parties fight for control of the U.S. House of Representatives, a house in which Republicans now hold a narrow majority, in the 2026 elections.
The governor also confronted Trump about the president’s ordered deployment of federal troops to Los Angeles.
