French police have arrested two suspects linked to the theft of French Crown jewels from the Louvre Museum in Paris. The robbery, which took place last weekend, led to the theft of nine pieces valued at millions of dollars, according to the French Ministry of Culture.
According to Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau, one of the detainees “was preparing to leave the territory from Roissy airport”, known as Charles de Gaulle, the capital’s main air terminal.
The arrests took place on Saturday night (25), around 10pm (local time), and the suspects — both around 30 years old — were already known to the police, the broadcaster reported. BFMTV. One of them was trying to board a flight to Algeria when he was detained.

The crime took place in the Apollo Gallery, on the upper floor of the museum, which houses part of the French Crown jewels. According to authorities, the robbery lasted just seven minutes, enough time for the thieves to break into two high-security storefronts and take nine items of historical and artistic value.
The case caused a strong repercussion in France and led the Louvre to reinforce its security protocols. The police work with the hypothesis that the criminals have acted with internal information about the museum’s structure and surveillance hours.
The French Ministry of Culture said that a team specialized in works of art and cultural heritage is following the investigations to try to recover the stolen jewelry, which includes pieces decorated with gold, diamonds and precious stones belonging to the former French monarchy.
