The president of the United States, , is expected to discuss ways to overcome differences with Brazil during a meeting with the president, in Kuala Lumpur, this Sunday (26), on the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) summit. The information was given by the American Secretary of State, responsible for negotiations with the South American country.
“Brazil is a big and important country. We believe that, in the long run, it will be beneficial for Brazil to choose us as a preferred trade partner, rather than China, for reasons of geography, culture and alignment in many aspects,” Rubio said in an interview during a flight to Kuala Lumpur. He highlighted, however, that there are points of friction, such as the treatment given to some judges, the performance of the Brazilian digital sector in relation to US companies and citizens, and posts on social networks.
Trump applied 50% tariffs on Brazilian products, alleging an alleged “witch hunt” against former president Jair Bolsonaro, convicted of attempted coup d’état and attacking democracy. The American government also accuses Brazil of imposing restrictions on large North American technology companies.
“We will have to work on this, in addition to the commercial issue. The two areas are intertwined,” said Rubio. “President Trump will explore ways to overcome these issues because we believe it will be beneficial, although it will take some time.”
The secretary highlighted that Trump and Lula had a “very positive” call recently and that he himself met with Brazilian Foreign Minister, Mauro Vieira. Asked whether Lula could influence Venezuela, Rubio stated that, although the Brazilian president does not recognize the Venezuelan dictator as the winner of the last election, it is not clear whether Brazil will be able to play a relevant role in this regard.
