Flamengo suffered a severe blow this Saturday (25) in the fight for the Brazilian Championship title. Defeated by Fortaleza 1-0, at Castelão, in the 29th round, Mengão not only wasted the chance to take the lead but also saw Palmeiras open a considerable lead in the final stretch. The two teams have the same 61 points, but Verdão has an advantage in the number of victories (in other words, today is not enough for the Rio team to tie on points) and will still play in this round, this Sunday (26), in a duel with Cruzeiro, at Palestra Itália.

Fortaleza’s goal was scored by Breno Lopes, 12 minutes into the first half. Mengão had the ball the entire time, but was unable to break through the Ceará team’s defense. The team led by Filipe Luís missed Pedro, who was left out of the match due to injury.

Why did Flamengo lose to Fortaleza?

  • Even without having the ball, Fortaleza managed to control the game, defending well and counterattacking with danger
  • Breno Lopes had plenty of space to finish from outside the area and score the winning goal
  • Fla missed Pedro, who is in great form, but was out due to injury
  • The Rio team lacked a bit of attitude, as they didn’t play football up to the standard of their squad.

  • Racing x Flamengo, on Wednesday (29), in the Libertadores
  • Santos x Fortaleza, on the 3rd, for the Brasileirão
