During CMTV’s special broadcast dedicated to Benfica’s elections, there was a tense moment between two commentators linked to the club. Mauro Xavier asked João Malheiro to “congratulate the new president of Benfica, João Noronha Lopes”, at a time when the vote count had not yet been completed. At that moment, Noronha Lopes was leading the count, but the scenario changed in the following hours.
The current president of Benfica ended up winning the first round of the elections, securing 42.13% of preferences, while João Noronha Lopes totaled 30.26%. None of the six candidates reached an absolute majority (more than 50%), which requires a second round, scheduled for November 8th.
Rui Costa and João Noronha Lopes are once again competing against each other in the race for the presidency of Clube da Luz, in a vote that will define who will lead Benfica in the four-year period 2025-2029.
