Palmeiras x Cruzeiro: understand the rule that canceled Ramón Sosa’s goal

The goalless draw between Palmeiras and Cruzeiro this Sunday (26), in the 30th round of the Brazilian Championship, was full of controversies. One of the moves that divided opinions was the disallowed goal by striker Ramón Sosa, from the alviverde team, who fouled goalkeeper Cássio. Amid the discussions, the Itatiaia sought the rule that was applied by the referee in the play.

The bid applies to “Rule 12”, which addresses “faults and misconduct” in the Arbitration Rulebook. The third topic highlights that the goalkeeper has control of the ball when it is “between his hands and any surface”, which is what happened in the play involving Cássio and Ramón Sosa.

“A goalkeeper is considered to have control of the ball with his hands or arms when:

  • the ball is between your hands or arms or between your hands or arms and any surface – for example, the floor or the goalkeeper’s own body;
  • hold the ball with an open palm;
  • is bouncing the ball off the ground or throwing it in the air.”

The bid

The play that resulted in the goal being disallowed took place 14 minutes into the second half. After a cross, Flaco López won from the top, and Cássio “tumbled” when making the save, giving the possibility of a rebound. That’s when Ramón Sosa arrived and pushed the ball into the goal.

However, by the time the Paraguayan finished, Cássio was already holding the ball against the pitch with one hand. Despite a lot of complaints from Palmeiras residents, the bid was annulled.
