Megaoperation in Rio de Janeiro favela leaves at least 60 dead. Police and military on site

Initiative is part of the fight against the territorial expansion of the Red Command

The Rio de Janeiro Police mega-operation in Complexo do Alemão left at least 60 dead. There are 56 criminals, two civil police officers and two BOPE military personnel, according to state security forces.

This is, according to the Rio government, the largest operation in the state’s history and also the most lethal.

Objective of Operation Containment

The action, called Operation Containment, is part of a state government initiative to combat the territorial expansion of the CV (Comando Vermelho) and arrest criminal leaders operating in Rio and other states.

The agents are trying to carry out 100 arrest warrants against CV members – among the targets, 30 are from other states, with emphasis on members of the faction in Pará, who are believed to be hiding in these regions.

Until the last update, 81 people had already been detained. Two suspects who were shot are in custody at Penha Hospital.

During the operation, three residents who were victims of stray bullets were taken to Hospital Getúlio Vargas. Among them, a woman was grazed while in the gym and has already been discharged.

A Bope police officer was shot in the leg during a raid in the forested area of ​​Complexo do Alemão. According to the unit’s command, the agent was injured during an exchange of gunfire and was taken to the Corporation’s Central Hospital in the Estácio neighborhood, with no risk of death.

Deputy Bernardo Leal, from the DRE (Narcotics Suppression Police Station), was also shot in the leg during the operation. According to information from the corporation, he is well and out of risk.

Among those detained in the action is a suspect identified as a financial operator for Edgar Alves de Andrade, known as “Doca” or “Urso”, one of the heads of Comando Vermelho.

The police also seized ten rifles, a pistol, three cell phones and nine motorcycles.
