Two new openings confirmed by Mercadona in Portugal, reinforcing the Spanish supermarket chain’s commitment to the national market. The brand will debut in the city of Lisbon, on November 13th, and will also open a new store in Amial, in Porto, on November 27th.
According to the company, the expansion represents “an important step in strengthening Mercadona’s presence in Portugal”, both locally and nationally. The Porto store, which will be located at Rua Nova do Tronco nº 125, will be the fourth in the municipality and will have around 65 new jobs, all with open-ended contracts from the first day, a model that the company maintains in all its hirings.
Porto welcomes the brand’s fourth store
The new space in Amial will have a sales area of 1,900 square meters, with wide corridors and the traditional Mercadona sections: Delicatessen, Fishmonger, Butchery, Fruits and Vegetables, Pastry and Bakery, Perfumery and Ready to Eat.
According to the brand’s publication, the objective is to offer a more comfortable shopping experience, with fresh products and spaces designed to improve circulation and service. “This opening represents an important step in strengthening our presence in Porto, bringing us even closer to our ‘Boss’ (clients)”, says the company in .
The Amial store appears five years after Mercadona’s arrival in Porto and consolidates the growth of the Spanish chain in the North, where it already has a consolidated presence.
Lisbon welcomes the first Mercadona store
Before opening in Porto, Mercadona will open its first store in the city of Lisbon, on November 13, at 9:00 am, on Rua Hermínio da Palma Inácio, in the Alta area of Lisbon.
This will be a symbolic opening, as it marks the brand’s official entry into the capital, six years after the beginning of expansion in Portugal.
According to the company, the new space will generate around 90 direct jobs, also with permanent contracts, and will have a corporate office to support the brand’s operations in the region.
The group recalls that the new office “will complement the one in Vila Nova de Gaia”, where Mercadona’s national headquarters have been located since 2020.
National expansion at a steady pace
Mercadona currently has more than 50 stores in Portugal, and the growth rate is expected to continue in the coming years.
“These new openings reflect the commitment to continue growing in a sustainable way, getting closer to our customers and creating local jobs”, explains the group.
The national expansion plan foresees new stores in different parts of the country, including urban and densely populated areas, such as Lisbon and Porto.
