PRF increases policing on Rio’s highways after operation with 64 deaths

The PRF (Federal Highway Police) will continue this Wednesday (29) with reinforced policing on the highways that cross the state of Rio de Janeiro and will be expanded. The measure comes after Operation Containment, by the Civil and Military Police of Rio, which resulted in 64 deaths, four of which were police officers.

This Wednesday, more PRF teams – from other states – will arrive in Rio to increase personnel and overt policing.

According to information from the institution, after the operation there were attempts to block it, but the teams acted quickly and managed to avoid it.

According to the Rio Operations and Resilience Center, roads in the capital of Rio de Janeiro were closed due to police incidents that took place on Tuesday afternoon (28). See list below:

  • Rua Riachuelo, at number 36, in the Center
  • Av. Pastor Martin Luther King Júnior, in Engenho da Rainha
  • Rua Barão do Bom Retiro, towards the Center, at Rua Acaré
  • Av. Brasil, central lane towards Zona Oeste, near Benfica
  • Avenida Vinte de Janeiro, at Estrada do Galeão, towards Tom Jobim Airport
  • Av. Brasil, at Piscinão de Ramos, towards the Center

Operation Containment

The action, called Operation Containment, is part of a State Government initiative to combat the territorial expansion of the CV (Comando Vermelho) and arrest criminal leaders operating in Rio and other states.

The police attempted to carry out 100 arrest warrants against CV members — among the targets, 30 were from other states, with emphasis on members of the faction in Pará, who were said to be hiding in these regions.

Until the last update, 81 people had already been arrested. 64 people died, including 4 police officers. Two suspects who were shot are in custody at Penha Hospital.

During the operation, three residents who were victims of stray bullets were taken to Hospital Getúlio Vargas. Among them, a woman was grazed while at the gym and has already been discharged.

A Bope police officer was shot in the leg during a raid in the forested area of ​​Complexo do Alemão. According to the unit’s command, the agent was injured during an exchange of gunfire and was taken to the Corporation’s Central Hospital in the Estácio neighborhood. He is not at risk of death.

Deputy Bernardo Leal, from the DRE (Narcotics Suppression Police Station), was also shot in the leg during the operation. According to information from the corporation, he is well and out of risk.

Among those arrested in the action is a suspect identified as a financial operator for Edgar Alves de Andrade, known as “Doca” or “Urso”, one of the heads of Comando Vermelho.
