French authorities made five new arrests, including that of one of the main suspects, as part of the investigation into the robbery of the Louvre Museum in Paris. The remaining four will have links to the suspected assailants.
The Paris prosecutor, Laure Beccuautold RTL radio that one of the detainees was a target of the authorities, adding that DNA evidence links the main suspect “to the robbery that was committed” on October 19th.
In the same interview broadcast this morning, Beccuau said that the five new arrests took place in different locations in the Paris metropolitan area, particularly in Seine-Saint-Denis.
One of the suspects may have even been involved in the robbery. According to information collected by , the remaining four are suspects, as they have links to criminals already detained: or because they crossed paths with men already detained; or because they are family members.
Authorities believe that these four aforementioned arrests could help the investigation reach .
Even so, said Laure Beccuau, on RTL, “the searches carried out during the night of this Wednesday did not allow the recovery of the stolen proceeds” – emphasized the prosecutor referring to the stolen jewelry, valued at 88 million euros.
On Wednesday, two others suspected of participating in the robbery of the Louvre Museum were formally arrested.
The two men, aged 34 and 39, arrested on Saturday night, were accused of organized crime and placed in pre-trial detention, the Paris Public Prosecutor’s Office announced on Wednesday night.
On October 19th, members of the commando group of robbers positioned a forklift next to the museum building, on a pier on the banks of the Seine, and two of them, with their faces covered, climbed on the lifting platform to the window of the Apollo gallery where the jewels were located.
