22% express disgust and 11, joy over the crisis in RJ on the networks – 10/31/2025 – Panel

A survey carried out by the Digital Studies Center of the FGV School of Business Administration (Fundação) and released this Thursday (30) shows that 11% of Brazilians expressed joy on their social networks with the new .

Another 22% felt disgust and 22% felt fear in their accounts on digital platforms between Tuesday (29), the day of the action, until this Thursday. They were between security agents and suspected members of criminal organizations. It is the largest operation in the history of Brazil.

The study analyzed more than 43 thousand mentions, collected on social networks, , , Reddit, and , to the intervention in the Alemão and Penha complexes, in the north of the capital of Rio de Janeiro.

An artificial intelligence engine, called “natural language programming,” analyzes the words and phrases in the posts. It then assigns a feeling to them according to the construction of the message published by users.

Feelings of disgust, fear and joy correspond to 55% of users’ expressions since the action. According to Lilian Carvalho, PhD in marketing and coordinator of the study center, the mechanism understood that 45% of mentions do not have a strong emotion associated with them — they could be, for example, messages like “what happened in Rio?”, which do not explicitly express a feeling about the fact.

Analyzing the wording used in the posts, the study showed that, of all mentions of the megaoperation, 67% use neutral words and 27% negative, with another 6% using positive words. The use of words does not necessarily correspond to support or rejection of the action in the city.

The most frequently cited terms, according to the survey, were “Complexos do Alemão and Penha”, “CV” (acronym for , predominant faction in Rio), “public security”, “Operação Contenção”, “”, “organized crime” and “criminal factions”.

The governor of , (), received 10% of total mentions, while the government () was mentioned by 2.3% in publications. Posts, in this case, can be either positive, negative or neutral.

Both politicians have publicity, an issue that should take center stage in the 2026 elections. While Castro and the Planalto Palace omitted speech, the federal government cites Federal Police operations and the Public Security PEC as non-violent fronts to combat crime.

For conservatives, the time is to detach themselves from the agendas most linked to the former president (PL), such as the amnesty for those convicted of the coup plot. The moment is to focus on real-life actions, as shown by Sheet.

Lilian Carvalho states that it is too early to say which of these narratives in politics will prevail over the operation in Rio. For her, the perception that gaining more space could have an impact on society’s understanding of future actions.

She says that, in addition to the joy with the operation, other feelings may be included, such as the joy in taking action in the face of violent places, even with police violence in the action, or the hope that, after the operation, something will change.

Lilian understands that barbarism is transformed into a digital spectacle with the broadcast of grotesque photos and videos about the victims. “Algorithms have no side, they reproduce and exacerbate what is most noisy and emotional in each bubble”, he highlights.
