Wolfgang Büscher sees a photograph, has a thought about it and sets off. This was the case on all his trips when he started researching a book. In the summer of 2001, the German writer and journalist set off on his most famous route, the forced march from Berlin to Moscow. Almost a decade later, the author was on foot again, once again alone, from the wintry north of the USA, 3,500 kilometers south to the Rio Grande. Most recently, however, the former reporter traveled for various German-language newspapers for the book The way in an off-road vehicle with the Tuareg deep into the Algerian desert, to the last retreat of a French hermit. And what did the photo look like that inspired Büscher to take this latest trip through the Sahara?
