A small plane crashed Friday morning (10/31) in Saratoga County, killing the pilot and injuring a passenger.

More specifically, as cbs6albany.com reports, the crash happened around 10:30 a.m. on Wyndham Way in the town of Milton shortly after the plane took off from the nearby Saratoga County Airport.

Investigators say the 1964 Mooney M20E four-seater crashed into a tree before coming to rest just outside a home. One of the plane’s wings became entangled in a tree before the wreckage caught fire.

Homeowner John Clapper said he heard a loud noise while working in his kitchen and had no idea what had happened outside his home.

“I went to the front door and saw a man running on my lawn. He said, “The plane just went down – bring a water hose.” Two other people came and pulled the other man out of the aircraft. They saved his life,” Clapper told CBS6.

Saratoga County Sheriff Michael Zurlo said the passenger was ejected from the aircraft and then taken to Albany Medical Center with serious injuries. The pilot, however, did not make it. Their identities have not been released.

Strong winds were blowing in the area with 64 km. the time. The residents were inside the home at the time of the crash, but were not injured.

“I think what happened is it took off from the airport, but there were 40 mph wind gusts, and I think as it was trying to gain altitude, because it was a single-engine plane, the wind picked it up and it pushed it like a kite right into my tree, and the plane went straight down, missed my house, missed my two cars, which were only four feet away, so we put the lights out. flames with a couple of extinguishers, and that’s when the emergency services and everybody else started arriving, so it was a crazy day,” Clapper said.

Sheriff Zurlo said the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have been notified and will work with local authorities to determine the cause of the crash.
