A medieval tower in Rome, Italy, near the famous ruins of the Roman Forum, partially collapsed this Monday, 3, during renovation work on the structure, leaving at least one worker seriously injured, according to Italian media. Hundreds of tourists witnessed the moment when firefighters used a mobile ladder and took a stretcher to the upper level of the Torre dei Conti. Three workers were rescued, while one remained trapped inside the structure, newspaper Corriere della Sera said.
During the rescue operation carried out by firefighters, another part of the tower collapsed, raising a cloud of smoke. Firefighters who were on a mobile ladder quickly descended when the additional collapse occurred. There is no information whether, after this second incident, other people were also injured.
The Torre dei Conti was built in the 13th century by Pope Innocent III as a residence for his family. The tower was damaged in an earthquake in 1349 and suffered subsequent collapses in the 17th century.
