A student at the Polytechnic Institute of Tomar (IPT) was suspended and is the subject of disciplinary proceedings after the release of a video showing him carrying out a practice considered humiliating for freshmen Accounting students.
The images, published on the YouTube channel of the newspaper “Tomar na Rede”, show the young man ordering a group of ten freshmen to lie down in a ditch, with their heads resting on rocks and their hands behind their backs. During the episode, the praxant shouts, insults the students, throws water at them and throws objects to the floor, almost hitting his colleagues.
The video generated outrage on social media and led to several criticisms of the way the practice was conducted. Many regretted the student’s attitude, considering that the practice was carried out with humiliation and aggression, instead of promoting integration and academic spirit.
Faced with the controversy, the Magnum Consillium Veteranorum, the body responsible for supervising academic traditions at IPT, heard the student involved and decided to temporarily suspend his participation in usual activities. The institution also informed that it may review the decision or apply a definitive exclusion, depending on the results of the ongoing process.
The administration of the Polytechnic Institute of Tomar also confirmed the suspension of the student and the opening of disciplinary proceedings to determine responsibilities.
