Meteor, November 2
A meteor ripped through the skies of Portugal, in the early evening of this Sunday. The moment – also seen in Spain – was captured from north to south.
Which moon, which what. What shone most brightly on Sunday night, in Portugal, was a meteor.
It was 7:41 pm on Sunday when a flash appeared in Portugal. According to reports from social media pages specializing in meteorology, the meteor possibly belongs to the subcategory of bolides – the brightest and most luminous.
However, as noted by , authorities and astronomical observatories have not yet released an official analysis of the origin and trajectory of the meteor.
The phenomenon was seen in Spain and in practically the entire territory of mainland Portugal, from Vila Real to Vila Real de Santo António.

However, the SMART project, which monitors these celestial bodies in the Iberian Peninsula, said that it was indeed a bolide.
“This impressive ball of fire, with a luminosity greater than that of the full moon, it was generated by a rock (a meteoroid) from a comet that entered the atmosphere at approximately 81 thousand kilometers per hour“, describes the project, cited by .
When the celestial body is in space it is called meteoroide. When it enters the atmosphere it becomes called meteor. If it falls to Earth, the debris is called meteorites.
These phenomena occur when fragments enter the Earth’s atmosphere at high speed – burning due to friction and producing an intense light which can be seen from a great distance.
The SMART project shared a video on YouTube, explaining the phenomenon.
