The third earthquake in less than three months shook the Turkish city of Sindirgi on Monday. The most recent tremors had a magnitude of 4.9, local officials said. TASR informs about it according to the report of the AFP agency.

The earthquake occurred shortly after 1:30 p.m. CET at a depth of 11 kilometers, the Disaster and Emergency Management Office AFAD announced on platform X. The Kandilli Seismological Institute reported a slightly higher magnitude with a value of 5.1.

The city of Sindirgi, located approximately 150 kilometers northeast of the resort of Izmir, was hit by an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 on October 28. The tremors were also felt in Izmir and Istanbul, but no injuries were reported. Tremors with the same intensity were recorded already on August 10, when one person died in Sindirgi and dozens of others were injured.

Turkey is criss-crossed by geological faults that have caused disasters in the country in the past. In the February 2023 earthquake in the southwest, at least 53,000 people died and the city of Antakya was devastated. In early July, a magnitude 5.8 earthquake in the same area killed one person and injured 69 others.
