More than one hundred thousand students will be without a teacher for at least one subject. The complaint comes from the teachers’ movement known as “Missão Escola Pública”, which also points the finger at the guardianship for the lack of payment for overtime and teachers’ travel.
Teachers who teach overtime and those who benefit from travel allowance are working without receiving additional payments. Schools are awaiting an order from the Ministry of Education.
“The Ministry of Education lacks – I even suppose the Ministry of Finance lacks – authorization for us, directors, to pay for overtime and travel allowance. Extra hours that teachers have already taught and travel support that they have already disbursed”, says Filinto Lima, president of the Association of Public School Directors.
Cristina Mota, from Missão Escola Pública, reveals that, last year, overtime only started to be paid in January and it is feared that the same could happen this year.
In addition to this problem, schools, already in the middle of the first school term, are still struggling with a lack of teachers. A “Public School Mission” talks about more than 100 thousand students without a teacher for at least one subject. Fenprof does not confirm this number, but reveals that, at the beginning of this week, there were close to 400 missing timetables, which has a direct impact on more than 30 thousand students. Also in the 1st cycle, more than 4,000 students are being affected by the lack of teachers.
The National Federation of Teachers will take these issues to the meeting with the supervisory authority, on Monday. The Ministry of Education, contacted by SIC, did not respond to the questions requested in a timely manner.
