Everyone thinks it's an ornamental shrub. Its fruits, flowers and bark relieve pain and intestinal cramps and protect against diabetes

There are some plants that seem to please only our eyes, but actually hold great power. It is undoubtedly one of them coral viburnum. We often see it in gardens or growing wild, but few people realize that it is worth preparing tea, jam or juice from it. They will not only be tasty, but also very healthy.

Coral viburnum (Viburnum’s wealth) is one of the most beautiful shrubs that can be found in many Polish gardens. It is also often found on the edge of forests, especially near streams. Its flowering period is May and June, when it is covered with white flowers, and in autumn its bright red fruits attract attention.

Indeed, viburnum looks like a typical ornamental plant and for most people it fulfills this function, but it is worth knowing that its properties go far beyond the aesthetic function. How can it help a person? The answer can be found in traditional folk medicine – Coral viburnum has long been valued for its antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory and calming properties.

However, many people wonder how to use the benefits of this intriguing shrub? Are viburnum fruits really edible? Both yes and no. This question is difficult to answer unequivocally. Raw viburnum fruit eaten in large quantities may cause poisoning with symptoms such as: nausea, vomiting, dizziness or speech disorders. In severe cases, viburnum poisoning can even lead to death. To make it safe to eat its fruit, it should be frozen for at least 24 hours.

So how can you use the health properties of coral viburnum? Three types of herbal raw material can be obtained from this shrub: fruit, flowers and bark. They include, among others: flavonoids, tannins, pectins, phenolic compounds and essential oils.

It is worth paying special attention to flavonoids, which are a great support when it comes to relieving inflammation, strengthening blood vessels and maintaining proper blood sugar levels. Moreover, they can also prevent the development of cancer.

On the other hand pectin are natural dietary fiber with probiotic properties that support the proper functioning of the intestines. If we consume them regularly, we can expect, among others:

  • strengthening the intestinal bacterial microflora,
  • less diarrhea, flatulence and constipation,
  • alleviating esophageal reflux.

In addition, pectins are important in preventing the development of diabetesthey also help cleanse the body of heavy metals.

Coral viburnum is known as a remedy for menstrual disorders, especially the associated pain and excessive bleeding. Just add half a teaspoon of dried bark to a glass of hot water, boil and strain. Three teaspoons taken after eating should help with painful ailments.

In addition Coral viburnum infusions can support the relief of annoying cough and cold symptomsand this is primarily due to the presence of vitamin C.

What to make with coral viburnum fruit? It turns out that they can also play an important role in the kitchen – after freezing, of course, when they lose their characteristic bitterness. Viburnum fruit can be used to prepare delicious preserves full of vitamins.

Viburnum berries also work well in juices, jams, tinctures and syrups. If, on the other hand, you want a healthy and delicious tea, you can also dry the coral viburnum (flowers, bark and fruit).
