The house of the mayor of Vila Nova de Gaia, Luís Filipe Menezes, was robbed on Tuesday afternoon, while the official inauguration ceremony was taking place, he revealed on Instagram.

The case was revealed on Wednesday night by Luís Filipe Menezes on social media, where the mayor said that his house was “savagely robbed and vandalized”.

The mayor of Vila Nova de Gaia wrote that “everything that had any value was taken” and that the crime must have been planned, as the residence was unoccupied during the previous week, a period in which he and his family were outside of Portugal.

Even so, the assault occurred while he was taking office as president of the Chamber, an event that took place on Tuesday afternoon in the Gaia municipal auditorium.

Whoever did it, everything leads us to believe that he knew about politics because, despite my house having been empty the previous week, he preferred the time of my inauguration for this evil invasion”, the publication reads.

And he continues: “We must trust our excellent police and forget what they took away from us, which was valuable and had a great emotional connection.”

Contacted by Lusa, a source from the Porto GNR Territorial Command confirmed that he was at the scene and that “the facts were reported to the Public Ministry”.

Luís Filipe Menezes was elected on October 12th in the local elections by the PSD/CDS-PP/IL coalition, returning to Gaia, the municipality he presided over from 1997 to 2013.
