One person was injured on Monday when a package bomb exploded at a branch of the German insurance company Allianz in the central French city of Montluçon. This was reported by AFP with reference to local authorities. The regional government said in a statement that the explosion occurred shortly after 2:00 p.m. when picking up letters and packages from the mailbox.

“Apparently a grenade was placed in the mailbox, which exploded while collecting the mail,” said mayor Frédéric Laporte. According to prosecutor Christian Magret, the injured is the 34-year-old son of the head of the agency’s branch.

Before police experts began their work at the scene, the premises of the branch were examined by bomb disposal experts. The judicial police took over the investigation. In response, Allianz has condemned “in the strongest possible terms” any act of violence against its employees, branches or property.
