Successive sales

Póvoa Dão was in the news in May 1995 for being sold for 80 thousand contos (around 400 thousand euros), at a time when “four elderly people, from the dozens of families that 20 years before (1975) lived in the village, lived in the village”.

In 1995, it was the second time that the village had been sold, after “11 contos de reis were involved in the “first transaction”, the Lusa agency wrote at the time.

In 2000, Póvoa Dão was once again in the news because the 32 rural houses (from T0 to T3) completely built in granite, on the left bank of the Dão River, were available for sale and also for tourism.

Four years later, the president of the Catarino group, from Cantanhede, Vitor Catarino, who acquired the village and recovered it, told Agência Lusa that, although several families have been occupying their houses, which have a habitability license, for more than a year, it was only in the last few days that the village tourism license was granted, which will allow tourists to be welcomed in some rooms reserved for this purpose”.

In 2004, the then Minister of Economy, Carlos Tavares (PSD), inaugurated the rehabilitation of Póvoa Dão, whose origins date back to Alfonsine inquiries prior to 1258 (13th century).

Since its acquisition in 1995, Grupo Catarino has invested around 3,500 thousand euros in the recovery of the village and in infrastructure, wrote the Lusa agency in 2004.

At the time, 20 houses had been sold to families in the cities of Porto, Lisbon, Coimbra and Viseu and the group intended to keep “six or seven” for tourist use.

The architectural complex is made up of 32 houses, a restaurant, a swimming pool and a tennis court accessible both to the owners of the houses that are sold and to temporary residents on a village tourism basis.
