Maduro orders ‘massive mobilization’ of troops after aircraft carriers arrive

The government of Nicolás Maduro announced this Tuesday (11) the beginning of a new phase of the “Independence 200 Plan”, which foresees the massive mobilization of troops, weapons systems and military assets throughout Venezuelan territory.

The measure is a direct response to what Caracas classifies as an “imperialist threat” in the face of the increased presence of United States ships, planes and troops in the Caribbean Sea, including the arrival of the aircraft carrier Gerald Ford.

According to the Venezuelan Ministry of Defense, the operation involves the deployment of land, air, naval, river and missile units, in addition to the Bolivarian militia and citizen security bodies.

The declared objective is to guarantee the country’s comprehensive defense, with coordinated exercises on land, sea and air, in addition to optimizing the command, control and communications of the armed forces.

The mobilization takes place amid almost three months of tensions between Caracas and Washington, which have intensified since August.

While the Venezuelan government accuses the United States of trying to force a regime change, the Trump administration claims that its military maneuvers aim to combat drug trafficking and prevent drugs from entering American territory.

Despite the announced military escalation, the Venezuelan press states that the capital Caracas does not, so far, have a visible presence other than the usual security forces.
