A Ukrainian drone attack caused a large fire at the Orsknefteorgsintez oil refinery in Orsk, in the Russian region of Orenburg, more than 1,400 kilometers from the front line in Ukraine.

Ukrainian forces confirmed the attack, which took place on Monday, justifying it as part of their efforts to disrupt fuel supplies to the Russian army.

With the target 1,400 kilometers from the front line, very close to the border with Kazakhstan, this is one of the deepest Ukrainian attacks inside Russian territory, according to analysts, hitting energy infrastructure essential to the Kremlin’s war effort.

Ukraine has been intensifying drone attacks on refineries and fuel depots that supply Russian forces and support Russian oil exports, one of the Kremlin’s main sources of revenue.

The Orsknefteorgsintez refinery, which produces more than 30 types of petroleum products, including gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and lubricants and has an annual capacity of 6.6 million tons, is one of the sources of supply for Russian forces.

Geolocated images show a cloud of smoke over the refinery. According to the Institute for the Study of War, there are images that show a drone flying over the area before the attack.
