Structure was preventively closed after authorities detected cracks and movements in the ground; watch the video
A section of the Hongqi Bridge collapsed in Sichuan province, southwest China, on Tuesday (11.Nov.2025). The structure is on a national highway that connects the Chinese interior to Tibet. There were no victims.
The structure had been preventively closed on Monday (Nov 10), when the police in the city of Maerkang closed the bridge – which is 758 meters long – to all types of traffic. The measure was taken after authorities detected cracks in nearby slopes and roads, as well as movement in the terrain of an adjacent mountain.
The collapse occurred when conditions on the mountainside deteriorated, resulting in landslides that caused the access bridge and roadbed to collapse. Construction of the structure was completed in early 2025.
