Attorney General of the Republic, Paulo Gonet, reinforces his intention to have a discreet profile if he is reappointed to the position

The Attorney General of the Republic, , reinforced, this Wednesday (12), his intention to have a discreet profile if he is reappointed to the position. During a hearing at the Constitution and Justice Commission, Gonet defended secrecy and actions without leaks or public demonstrations.

“My statements invariably took place in the case files, without leaks or public comments, without any damage to the image or presumption of innocence of those being investigated. Respect for judicial secrecy has always been obeyed absolutely and will continue to be so”, he said during a session of the commission that analyzes his nomination for another two years in the position. The statements can be seen as a way for the PGR to contrast itself with some of its predecessors, such as Augusto Aras and Rodrigo Janot.

As shown by Estadão ColumnCentrão senators interviewed say that resistance to Gonet’s reappointment is restricted to Bolsonarism. The Attorney General of the Republic, they say, has a good dialogue with Congress and is well-regarded even in part of the PL, the former president’s acronym.

Despite the Lula government’s fears about the hearing, parliamentarians did not identify any concrete movement to block Gonet from a new mandate. During the hearing, the senator (PL-RJ) stated that Gonet is following orders from the minister of the Federal Supreme Court (), . “You persecuted, you joined in the dirty game of a person who, in my opinion, is sick, but you are there, you seem to be following his orders”, he stated. The PGR called for Bolsonaro’s conviction in the coup plot. The former president was sentenced by the STF to 27 years and three months in prison.
