Landslides in southwest China caused a bridge to collapse in Sichuan province. The built bridge was already closed on Monday due to signs of damage, no victims were reported.
A section of a recently opened bridge in southwest China’s Sichuan province, which formed part of a highway connecting the country’s interior with the Tibet Autonomous Region, collapsed on Tuesday, local authorities said. No casualties were reported, TASR writes, according to a Reuters report.
Police in the city of Maerkang (Barkam) closed the 758-meter-long Chungchi Bridge to all traffic as of Monday afternoon after cracks appeared on nearby slopes and roads and shifts in the adjacent mountainous terrain, the local government said.
On Tuesday afternoon, conditions on the mountainside worsened, triggering landslides that led to the collapse of the access bridge and roadbed, the municipality added. Construction of the bridge was completed earlier this year, according to information posted on social media by construction firm Sichuan Road & Bridge Group.
