The Neanderthals were our closest relatives – so close that they and our ancestors shared offspring. All of this has only been known for a few years thanks to new information from ancient DNA, which also helped Neanderthal research in other contexts. The latest example is new analyzes of Neanderthal bones from the Goyet caves in Belgium, 50 kilometers southeast of Brussels.
