At least 19 people died and another 16 were injured of varying severity after the collapse of two adjacent residential buildings in the city of Fez, in central Morocco.

The incident occurred on the night of Tuesday to Wednesday in the Mostaqbal neighborhood, in Fez, when two four-story buildings collapsed, according to local authorities this Wednesday.

This is a “preliminary balance”, according to the same sources who indicated that a total of eight families lived in the two buildings.

“After receiving notification of the incident, local and security authorities, as well as Civil Protection personnel, immediately moved to the scene to begin search and rescue operations,” the sources reported.

At the scene of the accident, the authorities took measures to secure the perimeter of the collapsed buildings and evacuate the inhabitants of the adjacent homes.

The injured people were transferred to the Fez University Hospital Center to receive the necessary medical attention, the sources said, adding that search operations continue to find, among other things, whether there may be other victims among the rubble.
