When choosing a Christmas cake, tradition may no longer be the only factor influencing the decision. The price difference between the two is significant and, according to DECO PROteste, can reach four euros per kilo. According to the same source, bolo-rei is on sale in supermarkets from eight euros per kilo, while bolo-rinha tends to be more expensive, especially in neighborhood pastry shops and bakeries.
Christmas is approaching and, for many consumers, understanding what justifies these differences in cake prices can help balance the holiday budget.
The consumer protection organization states that the price of bolo-rei in hypermarkets starts at eight euros per kilo, rising to a minimum of 13 euros in traditional pastry shops.
According to the publication, the queen cake, despite being equally caloric, often has higher prices, with the difference between the two reaching up to four euros, depending on the place of purchase.
The queen cake wins in flavor for many, but loses in price
DECO PROteste remembers that the queen cake emerged as an alternative for those who do not like candied fruit. According to the same source, there are now several versions, from dried fruit cakes with or without gila to variations with chocolate, chestnut or even carob flour.
But diversity comes at a cost: these ingredients make the queen cake more expensive than the traditional king cake.
According to the publication, pastry shops sell queen cakes from 13 euros per kilo, with some copies costing more than 30 euros. The complexity of the ingredients and the increase in demand partly explain these values.
The organization also highlights that those who opt for gluten-free versions will find prices between 22.50 euros and 25 euros per kilo, for both king cake and queen cake, reflecting the increased cost of alternative flours.
Ingredients, place of purchase and tradition continue to influence price
DECO PROteste remembers that the place of purchase continues to be decisive: hypermarkets offer more competitive prices, but many families prefer neighborhood pastry shops, associating them with higher quality and artisanal production.
According to the same source, it is the ingredients that end up dictating the final price, especially in the case of queen cake, where the presence of dried fruits, praline, pine nuts or other more expensive elements makes production more expensive.
Pay attention to the toast, a detail that cannot be missed
The organization also leaves an important warning. The gift, when included, must be well wrapped and distinguishable from the food. According to DECO PROteste, it must be manufactured in a way that does not pose a risk of suffocation or perforation, thus guaranteeing safety for all consumers, especially younger ones.
As the festive season approaches, and in the face of an increasingly diverse market, the choice between king cake and queen cake continues to depend on the palate, but now also on the wallet. And, based on the numbers, the preference for queen cake can weigh more on the family budget than many imagine.
