Discovered in Saxony-Anhalt in 1934, the shaman of Bad Dürrenberg from the Mesolithic period continues to cause surprises today
An artistic reconstruction of the headdress of the shaman of Bad Dürrenberg. Feathers were also incorporated into the woman’s headgear, as current research shows.
The approximately 9,000-year-old grave of the so-called shaman of Bad Dürrenberg in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt is one of the most impressive finds in Central European prehistory and early history. The burial of a 30- to 40-year-old woman with a six-month-old child in her arms was discovered in 1934 and recovered in one afternoon under considerable time pressure.
