Earthquake hits vacation destination: Authorities issue tsunami warning

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.7 struck northern Japan on Friday night. The local meteorological agency issued a tsunami warning that could reach a height of one meter. TASR writes about it according to AFP.

The US Geological Survey specified that the earthquake occurred at 11:44 local time (3:44 CET) at a depth of 20 kilometers about 130 kilometers east of the city of Kuji in Iwate Prefecture on the largest Japanese island of Honshu.

The earthquake hit Japan shortly after Monday’s 7.5-magnitude quake, which injured more than 50 people. Public broadcaster NHK said the level of shaking was less than the previous earthquake, which it knocked goods off the shelves, broke roads and windows and caused tsunami waves with a height of 70 centimeters.

Japan sits on four tectonic plates on the western edge of the Pacific “Ring of Fire”. In a country of about 125 million people, they record around 1500 tremors annually, which is roughly 18 earthquakes worldwide. However, the vast majority are of moderate intensity.
