Thailand’s Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has dissolved parliament, clearing the way for early elections. The reason is a dispute with the largest opposition faction. King Maha Vajiralongkorn has approved the relevant decree, the official gazette said on Friday. “I am returning power to the people,” Anutin, who leads a minority government, said on social media on Thursday evening. According to the law, the elections must now take place within 45 to 60 days. The dissolution of parliament was originally planned for the end of January.
