Flamengo and Paris Saint-Germain they will meet again next Wednesday (17/02), when they decide the title of the Intercontinental Cup, at the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium, in Doha, Qatar. The duel will mark the first official meeting between the clubs, but the history between red-blacks and Parisians already has three previous clashesall friendly and played at the Parc des Princes, home of PSG, in Paris.
The retrospect is balanced. In three games, each team has one victory, in addition to one draw. The first chapter of this story was written in 1975when Flamengo surprised the then emerging PSG and won 2-0, with two goals from Luisinho Lemos. The match was attended by names that would mark an era in Brazilian football, such as Zico, Júnior and Rondinelli.
Four years later, in 1979the French got revenge. Playing again in front of their fans, Paris Saint-Germain won 3-1. Flamengo’s goal was scored by Zico, who was once again the protagonist even in the defeat. That red-black team included historic players such as Júnior, Andrade, Adílio, Tita, Cláudio Adão and coach Paulo César Carpegiani.
The most recent confrontation took place in 1991 (photo game from the article). Flamengo and PSG tied 1-1 in normal time, with a goal from Zinho for the Rio team. The decision went to penalties, and Rubro-Negro came out on top by winning 3-1, winning the Paris Tournament. The team was led by Vanderlei Luxemburgo and had names such as Júnior – present in all duels against the French –, Gilmar (who saved two penalties), Júnior Baiano, Marcelinho Carioca and Paulo Nunes.
Now, more than three decades after the last meeting, Flamengo and PSG meet again in a completely different scenario. At stake will be the Intercontinental Cup title and the chance to go down in history as world champion.
