Social movements staged a protest against Talita Galhardo (PSDB) councilor and distributed this Tuesday (16) 500 hot meals to homeless people on the steps of the Rio de Janeiro City Council.
Last week, Talita published a video in which she asked the population not to donate food to homeless people this year. She associated the presence of these people with the potential increase in crime rates.
Talita has not published research or studies that confirm the statement.
The councilor was contacted for the report through her office team, but did not respond.
“With all due respect to the Christmas spirit and people’s good will, don’t distribute warm food on the street. These people who live on the street are often increasing crime rates and you are making them used to staying in that place,” Talita said in a video.
First term councilor, Talita is part of the base and was deputy mayor of Jacarepaguá.
The event was organized by MTST (Homeless Workers Movement), Citizenship Action and the Solidarity Kitchens Forum. The MTST wrote that “the statements are serious, stigmatizing and misinformed, in addition to directly attacking fundamental humanitarian actions in combating hunger and poverty.”
“What increases the homeless population is not solidarity, but the lack of public policies for housing, work, health and social assistance. Criminalizing those who distribute food is attacking those who save lives every day”, writes the movement in the call.
Talita’s speech, published on video last week, resonated with councilors in the Rio Chamber of “being part of the same parliament” as Talita.
In a speech in the plenary last Friday (12), she once again associated the presence of homeless people with crimes.
“I did not in any way say that the resident is a criminal. I said that rates increase in places where drug users use drugs.”
