The project that reduces the sentences of the former president (PL) and others convicted by the STF (Supreme Federal Court) for involvement in coup acts with the support of central parties, including those that have nominees in the first echelon of the Lula (PT) government.
There were 48 votes in favor of the text and 25 against, in addition to one abstention (Angelo Coronel, from PSD-BA) and five absences (Eduardo Braga, from MDB-AM, Eliziane Gama, from PSD-MA, Luís Carlos Heinze, from PP-RS, Omar Aziz, from PSD-AM and Weverton, from PDT-AM).
The result is a victory for the Bolsonarist political group and a defeat for the PT administration. Allies say that the president should veto the proposal.
The reduction of sentences has been discussed in Congress for months, but it only came about after Bolsonaro’s supporters agreed to vote for him instead of a total amnesty.
