It is a huge pain, but the suffering is over and now it is time to ask for justice”, wrote Tainara’s mother on social media.

Mechanical failure

During interrogation, the suspect stated that he was “completely sorry” and that he did not know Tainara Souza Santos.

Douglas said he had been in a bar since Friday night (28/11) and got involved in a fight to defend his friend Kauan after a disagreement with Tainara’s partner.

In the confusion, Douglas was allegedly hit in the face with a bottle and threatened with death. He stated that he left the place with his friend and, already in the car, he saw Tainara accompanied by the other boy. The man then allegedly made a maneuver and was leaving when “he ended up crashing the car into her”.

Douglas said he suspected the alleged mechanical problem when he noticed that “the car wasn’t going forward” after the crash, but denied noticing that the victim was under the vehicle.

He stated that people started to gesture, but he sped up and left the place towards Marginal Tietê. On the avenue, other drivers would have honked their horns and warned that a woman was below the vehicle. According to the man, he stopped at a gas station meters ahead — at which point Tainara freed himself from the car — but fled for fear of being attacked.

Douglas then told his family what happened and spoke to a lawyer, who advised him to leave the car away from the scene of the incident to be handed over to the authorities later. The man took the vehicle to an ex-father-in-law’s house without giving any reason.

So, Douglas booked a room in a distant hotel, where he was arrested the day after the crime. At the time of arrest, the man attacked a police officer and ended up shot in the arm.
