Driving with a blood alcohol level of 1.99: CDS councilor in Funchal suspends mandate after running over a man

The mayor admitted that he was driving under the influence of alcohol after the end of year celebrations, in an accident that left a 58-year-old man with several injuries.

The CDS councilor in the Funchal Chamber suspended his mandate after, after New Year’s Eve fireworks, he ran over a 58-year-old man on a street in the city’s downtown.

In a statement sent to the regional press, Leandro Silva admits that he had a blood alcohol level of 1.99 in the test carried out after the accident. The mayor guarantees that he provided assistance to the victim until emergency services arrived.

The victim suffered trauma to the shoulder and arm, spinal complaints and a head injury. The collision occurred on Rua do Carmo, in downtown Funchal.

The case is being investigated by the authorities.
