The Acre River showed a drop in level in the last 24 hours in Rio Branco, after reaching the mark of 15.38 meters on December (29). According to the Municipal Civil Defense, the river level dropped by around 60 centimeters until this Tuesday (31), due to the decrease in rain in the capital’s river basin. Despite the decline, the scenario still requires constant attention from the authorities.

In an interview with ContilNet This Wednesday (31), the coordinator of Municipal Civil Defense, Lieutenant Colonel Cláudio Falcão, highlighted that the reduction in the river level does not represent complete safety and that the moment is still one of caution. According to him, the volume of rain recorded in Rio Branco throughout the month remains high and could again directly impact the behavior of the water source.
“We have this decline because the amount of rain across the basin has decreased, but even so, here in Rio Branco we are closing the month with 561 millimeters, that’s a lot of rain. This situation could repeat itself in the month of January”, stated the colonel. Falcão also explained that even with the reduction in the level of the Acre River, there is still a high risk of overflows, especially in streams, due to soil saturation. He highlighted that the river remains above the overflow level and that any further increase in the volume of rain could cause a new rapid rise.

Given this scenario, the Municipal Civil Defense remains on high alert, the colonel states that the current reduction does not guarantee stability and that there is no safety margin for relaxing preventive actions. According to him, even if the Acre River leaves the overflow level in the next few days, this does not mean that the situation will be under control. He stressed that monitoring will continue intense until the end of the first quarter of 2025.
The Civil Defense projection is that the first quarter of 2026 will be marked by instability and increased attention.
“I would say that in January, February and March, we will experience moments of tension”, stated the colonel, based on data from 55 years of Civil Defense monitoring which shows that 73% of spillovers occurred in February and March.

The secretary also drew attention to the fact that the river overflowed in December, a situation considered rare in the monitoring history. According to him, this hadn’t happened in five decades. “The river overflowed in December, this hadn’t happened in 50 years. When it happened 50 years ago, it only happened once, in 1975. So this is the second time in the history of Civil Defense monitoring”, he explained.
The Municipal Civil Defense continues to monitor the level of the Acre River and the capital’s streams on an ongoing basis, keeping teams on standby in the face of the possibility of new rises in the coming days.
