United States President Donald Trump has postponed for a year a planned increase in tariffs on upholstered furniture and kitchen and bathroom cabinets imported into the country. The previous effective date for the tariffs was January 1, 2026. Currently, the tax rate charged on the import of these products is 25%.
“Given the ongoing productive negotiations regarding imports of wood products, the President has postponed the tariff increase to allow additional negotiations to occur with other countries,” the White House said in a statement published Wednesday evening (31).
In the document, the United States government reiterated that the strategy of taxing these products is part of an effort to strengthen the domestic industry and mitigate national security risks associated with excessive dependence on imported wood products.

The United States Department of Commerce also evaluates, under the same assumptions, imports of semiconductors and personal protective equipment, which according to the White House could result in future tariff actions.
