The Corinthians women’s team was unable to overcome Arsenal’s star-studded squad, at their home ground, but left the Champions Cup, the first women’s club world cup organized by FIFA, with a positive result at an important moment for the sport in Brazil, host of the World Cup in 2027.
Reaching the final after beating Gotham FC, current champion of the strong NWSL (National Women’s Soccer League), USA, and the Concacaf Champions Cup, was a result to be celebrated by the “Brabas”. Losing in extra time to the English team is nothing to regret.
This performance comes more than a year after the Brazilian women’s team returned to the final of the Paris Olympic Games in 2024. At the time, there was only talk of a gold medal dispute between the USA and Spain. But Brazil overcame the current world champions to guarantee a place in the decision.
Even with silver, after a defeat to the North Americans, the tournament gave Brazil visibility. Of the 22 players called up, 10 played for national teams. After their success, six went on to play for international teams.
The current scenario is similar, but instead of focusing solely on Corinthians, attention is focused on the women’s Campeonato Brasileito. On the Global Football Rankings website, the Brazilian league appears in tenth position among the most powerful, well behind the representatives of the two strongest: NWSL (National Women’s Soccer League), from the USA, and WSL (Women’s Super League), from England.
The possibility of this performance against the Americans and English contributing to an increase in interest in Brazilian football as a whole caused many to leave clubism aside, making the maxim “when one wins, everyone wins” valid.

And it’s not just volume, but quality. Brazilian Kerolin, for example, was voted best player of the season in 2023, when she played for North Carolina Courage. Lorena, from the Brazilian team, was voted the best goalkeeper in the competition in her debut season, last year, by the Kansas City Current.
This scenario, however, is not seen in England. In the current season, only one Brazilian played in the WSL, namely Kerolin, who transferred to Manchester City in 2024. In fact, just before the Brabas game, she scored her first hat-trick (three goals in the same match) in the English league, in the rout of the powerful Chelsea.
Despite being runner-up, Corinthians shows that national football has everything it takes to remain at the top among the best in the world. May this serve as an internal incentive for Brazilian clubs to invest even more in the sport. Since Brazil has the best Conmebol teams and should have several representatives in the next editions of what will be an annual competition.
