The first black director in the history of the (National Health Surveillance Agency), Thiago Campos said in an interview with the Hoje Pod podcast, specialized in topics related to marijuana, that the limits established by the agency for cultivating the plant will not make the production of marijuana unfeasible.
On February 3rd, the . Until then, the cultivation of the plant was prohibited in the country, with specific authorizations issued by the Court.
“The 0.3% is not a limit for the THC content of cannabis products and medicines that may be registered”, says Campos, who reported on the topic at the agency.
The relatively low limit has been criticized by advocates of medical marijuana use.
According to Campos, the limit was what was possible for progress to be made. “That’s what we could agree on. It’s better to take a safe step, and we can take other steps in the future,” he declared.
The director says he was inclined to regulate with a higher THC content, but states that most of his colleagues at Anvisa opted for greater precaution.
The decision, he says, was made with support from the technical area. According to him, the opinions of Anvisa’s specialized body were blocked for a long time during the government of Jair Bolsonaro (PL).
Campos also said that he finds it unnecessary to create a specific agency to regulate the issue of cannabis. According to him, Anvisa is capable of making the necessary decisions.
“We do not have elements today that say that the creation of a specific cannabis agency is a viable path and a path that would produce better results. Anvisa has broad competence on various topics, but has not shied away from the most difficult tasks”, he states.
The director says he had doubts about the impact that being black, with black hair, would have on the discussion of the topic. He claims, however, that he had support from colleagues within the government and the agency to carry out the task.
