The outgoing head of state, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, received the elected President of the Republic, António José Seguro, at the Palácio de Belém, in Lisbon, for three and a half hours, in a “very cordial” meeting, on national and international political issues.
António José Seguro arrived at the Belém Palace a few minutes before 4pm and was received at the entrance by the head of the Civil House of the President of the Republic, Fernando Frutuoso de Melo.
Soon after, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa greeted him in the Sala das Bicas, where the two shook hands for a long time, in front of the media, and went to the official office of the head of state.
Exact strides three and a half hoursthe President-elect left the Belém Palace, without making statements to journalists. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa accompanied him to Sala das Bicas, where they said goodbye, shortly before 7:30 pm.
This hearing took place the day after António José Seguro, former general secretary of the PS, was elected President of the Republic in the second round of the presidential elections, with close to 67% of the votes, against André Venturapresident of Chega.
On Sunday night, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa congratulated his successor, by phone, and wished him “best of luck and success for the mandate that the Portuguese gave him”, which will begin in a month.
According to one released by the Presidency of the Republic, “at the meeting, which took place in a very cordial atmospherepolitical issues were addressed national and international, which will require priority attention of the new President, as well as other matters relating to the transition of mandates”.
“Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa then invited his successor to visit the Palace, to see the facilities where he will hold office from March 9, and review the State Council room, where he was an advisor between 2011 and 2014”, reads the same note.
