Olympic downhill champion, American Breezy Johnson, who like other athletes at these Winter Olympic Games broke her medal shortly after receiving it, received a new one from the organizers, as she herself announced this Tuesday (10).
“They gave me a new one, yes, but they still need to record it,” explained the 30-year-old skier after recording the fastest time in the combined downhill team race in Cortina d’Ampezzo.
“They kept the old one, I don’t think they want you to have several at the same time,” added the American.
The reason for the first one’s breakage was her effusive jumping during the celebrations, which caused the metal to come loose from the ribbon that supported it.
Other Milan-Cortina medalists suffered the same setback, with the metal detaching from the ribbon after a sudden movement, something the organizers are treating very seriously.
“We will pay maximum attention to this. Obviously, we want the medal ceremony to be perfect, as it is one of the most important moments for the athletes”, declared Andrea Francisi, director of operations for these Olympic Games.
