Ukrainian soldier presumed dead calls his family three years after his funeral

A Ukrainian family experienced an absolutely moving moment when they discovered that a soldier, presumed dead three years ago and already buried, was after all alive. The news arrived via a simple telephone call and was recorded on video.

Nazar Daletskyi, 42, disappeared in May 2022, just months after the Russian invasion of Ukraine began. He had voluntarily enlisted to defend the country and, for months, his family believed he was in captivity. A year later, the identification of a completely burned body led authorities to conclude that it was the soldier. The funeral took place and the family mourned, convinced of his death.

Three years later, everything changed. The family received an unexpected call. On the other end of the line was Nazar. His mother immediately recognized his voice and the emotion was instantaneous. Screams, tears and joy marked the moment.

“It was very strange, because my son was dead. I buried him, and suddenly I heard his voice. Can you imagine? It was an immense joy”, said the mother, quoted by the international press.

In the video, the wife can also be heard saying: “I waited for you so long”, while other family members celebrate emotionally.

According to the information released, Nazar Daletskyi was released as part of a prisoner exchange. In September 2025, a former prisoner of war had told his family that he had seen him in a Russian prison, information that has now been confirmed.

The exchange of bodies is being investigated by the authorities, and the soldier’s return home is expected to happen soon. For the family, what happened is described as more than a miracle.
