A popular gardening practice is forcing branches of flowering shrubs and trees. We need to move them to a warm room and put them in the right place. Thanks to this, the plants will feel spring and bloom in our apartment. We will receive a natural and free decoration that will be better than exotic flowers from a flower shop.
Branches can only be cut from shrubs when the buds are well set but have not yet begun to develop.. It is best to do it from mid-January to March. Then the plants will be dormant for the winter and will respond appropriately to being placed in a vase.
We can’t do it earlier because they won’t bloom at all. On the other hand, branches placed in a vase too late, e.g. in April, will bloom, but only for a while.
So let’s pay attention to the buds. Those that are swollen but closed will be perfect for this treatment.

Not all flowering shrubs and trees are suitable for growing in a vase. Only specific plants will bloom from January to March at home. Which ones are we talking about?
- – we will see yellow flowers after 10 days;
- willow – the variety with the so-called “kittens”;
- tonsil – has delicate pink flowers;
- dogwood – its decorative flowers bloom the fastest and bloom the longest;
- pigwowiec – has no leaves, but red, pink or white flowers;
- plum, apple, cherry – produce white or pink flowers.
For a vase, cut one-year-old shoots without damage and with visible buds. We use a sharp pruning shears, cut at an angle, in the morning, on a frost-free day.
Before putting the branches into a vase, first remove the lower leaves and buds and lightly crush the tip with a hammer, which will make it easier to draw water. Immerse them in lukewarm water with sugar added.
Place the vase with branches in a bright place with diffused sunlight. The room temperature should be between 18 and 22 degrees Celsius. The vessel must not be placed near radiators. In case of dry air, it is worth spraying the plants with water.
Depending on the species and home conditions specimens will bloom within a few or a dozen or so days. When they fade, we can replace them with new branches.
It is also recommended to regularly change the water and trim the ends of the branches. Let’s take care of them in the same way as cut vase flowers.
