Parties and Government reached consensus, because of the risk of flooding in the Coimbra region – it will take place on Friday.
It’s not usual, but a debate quinzenal in the Assembly of the Republic was postponed. The debate would take place today, Wednesday, but it will be on Friday after all.
The initiative came from the Liberal Initiative. The party requested the postponement due to the worsening situation in Coimbra, related to the bad weather.
The request is justified by the need for the Prime Minister Luís Montenegro being on the groundin Coimbra, where the population is being evacuated due to the risk of collapse of the Mondego River dikes.
In the face of risk of Mondego banks collapsingthe Coimbra City Council decided on Tuesday night to move forward with a preventive withdrawal in several areas of the municipality, which covers between 2,800 and 3,000 people.
Throughout the morning, activities behind the scenes at Parliament. The president of the Assembly of the Republic, Aguiar-Branco, consulted the members of the conference of leaders.
The PSD parliamentary group “gives consent” to the postponement of the fortnightly debate with the prime minister. The PS parliamentary group too, taking into account the “risk to the lives of populations” affected by the rise of the Mondego.
At the end of the morning, confirmation: parties and Government reached consensus; the debate will take place in two days, at Friday at 10am. No one objected to the rescheduling.
The debate would take place after that of the Minister of Internal Administration, Maria Lúcia Amaral, on Tuesday night.
